MAHADEV TEMPLE
ETYMOLOGY:
Jashonath Temple was named after Maharaja Sir Jashwant Sinhji of Bhavnagar.
SIGNIFICANT HISTORY:
Maharaja Sir Jashwant Sinhji went on pilgrimage to Kashi- vishwanath and was so taken aback by the beauty of the temple that he decided to build one in Bhavnagar.
157 years ago, Maharaja Sir Jashwant Sinhji Bhavsinhji Gohil of Bhavnagar established Jashonath Mahadev Temple near Tapobhoomi Samadhi on the directions of his Gurudev Khakhi Sadhu Bhairavnathji.
The Jashonath Mahadev Temple in Saurashtra ranks second in the Shivalaya with the complete Shiva family, following the Somnath Mahadev Temple.
The one-and-a-half-decade-old temple of Jashonathji Mahadev has also been visited by renowned figures of the country, saints, and mahants. Zaverchand Meghani, the Father of the Nation- Gandhiji, is one of them.
The novel Saraswati Chandra's author, Govardhanram Tripathi, resided here and penned the novel.
Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel arrived in Bhavnagar when Maharaja Krishnakumar Sinhji decided to combine Bhavnagar kingdom with Independent India. In the presence of people from Bhavnagar, a gathering was conducted at Jashonath Mahadev temple at the time.
ARCHITECTURE & DESIGN:
This temple is built in the Nagara style and is made of sandstone. Some of the designs are local traditional designs.
Nagara style gained prominent in northern India. It is common in North India for a temple to be built entirely on a stone platform with steps leading up to it.
This temple has a similar design to the Kashi Vishwanath Temple. The craftsmen of this temple were natives from Kathiyawar, who didn't know the style at the time, therefore Maharaja Jashwantsinhji called up craftsman from the Varansi.
Jashonath Mahadev's temple offers a particular site of devotion among worshippers.

જશોનાથ મંદિરનું નામ ભાવનગરના મહારાજા સર જશવંત સિંહજીના નામ પરથી રાખવામાં આવ્યું હતું
નોંધપાત્ર ઇતિહાસ:
મહારાજા સર જશવંત સિંહજી કાશીવિશ્વનાથની યાત્રાએ ગયા હતા અને મંદિરની સુંદરતા જોઈને એટલા બધા આશ્ચર્યચકિત થઈ ગયા હતા કે તેમણે ભાવનગરમાં એક મંદિર બનાવવાનું નક્કી કર્યું હતું.
157 વર્ષ પહેલા ભાવનગરના મહારાજા સર જશવંતસિંહજી ભાવસિંહજી ગોહિલે તેમના ગુરુદેવ ખાખી સાધુ ભૈરવનાથજીના નિર્દેશ પર તપોભૂમિ સમાધિ પાસે જશોનાથ મહાદેવ મંદિરની સ્થાપના કરી હતી.
સૌરાષ્ટ્રનું જશોનાથ મહાદેવ મંદિર સોમનાથ મહાદેવ મંદિર પછી સંપૂર્ણ શિવ પરિવાર સાથે શિવાલયોમાં બીજા ક્રમે છે.
દોઢ દાયકા જૂના જશોનાથજી મહાદેવના મંદિરની દેશભરની જાણીતી હસ્તીઓ, સંતો, મહંતો પણ મુલાકાત લઈ ચૂક્યા છે. ઝવેરચંદ મેઘાણી, રાષ્ટ્રપિતા- ગાંધીજી, તેમાંથી એક છે
નવલકથા સરસ્વતી ચંદ્રના લેખક ગોવર્ધનરામ ત્રિપાઠી અહીં રહેતા હતા અને નવલકથા લખી હતી.
મહારાજા કૃષ્ણકુમાર સિંહજીએ ભાવનગર રાજ્યને સ્વતંત્ર ભારત સાથે જોડવાનું નક્કી કર્યું ત્યારે સરદાર વલ્લભભાઈ પટેલ ભાવનગર આવ્યા. ત્યારે ભાવનગરના લોકોની ઉપસ્થિતિમાં જશોનાથ મહાદેવ મંદિરે મેળો યોજાયો હતો.
આર્કિટેક્ચર અને ડિઝાઇન:
આ મંદિર નાગારા શૈલીમાં બનેલું છે અને તે રેતીના પથ્થરથી બનેલું છે. કેટલીક ડિઝાઇન સ્થાનિક પરંપરાગત ડિઝાઇન છે.
ઉત્તર ભારતમાં નાગારા શૈલીએ પ્રસિદ્ધિ મેળવી. ઉત્તર ભારતમાં મંદિરને સંપૂર્ણ રીતે પથ્થરના મંચ પર બાંધવામાં આવે અને તેની તરફ પગથિયાં હોય તે સામાન્ય છે. આ મંદિરની ડિઝાઇન કાશી વિશ્વનાથ મંદિર જેવી જ છે. આ મંદિરના કારીગરો કાઠિયાવાડના વતની હતા, જેઓ તે સમયે શૈલી જાણતા ન હતા, તેથી મહારાજા જશવંતસિંહજીએ વારાણસીથી કારીગરને બોલાવ્યા.
જશોનાથ મહાદેવનું મંદિર ઉપાસકોમાં ભક્તિનું એક વિશિષ્ટ સ્થળ પ્રદાન કરે છે.
