Where the Arabian Sea meets the quiet coastal village of Chanch, stands a bungalow that silently carries the echoes of Bhavnagar’s royal past. Near the historic Chanch port, this grand structure is more than just a building—it is a reminder of a time when the coastline played a vital role in the life and vision of the Bhavnagar State.
Chanch, today a village in Rajula taluka of Amreli district, was once part of the princely state of Bhavnagar. It was here, on the edge of the sea, that Maharaja Shri Krishnakumar Singhji of Bhavnagar envisioned a magnificent coastal residence. The foundation stone of Chanch Bungalow was laid on the auspicious day of Akhatrij in 1945, marking the beginning of a decade-long journey of craftsmanship and royal ambition.
The construction of the bungalow took nearly ten years and is believed to have cost around 20 lakh rupees—a significant sum for its time. Spread across an expansive layout, the bungalow is said to house as many as 88 rooms, reflecting the scale and grandeur associated with Bhavnagar’s royal architecture.
Overlooking the sea, Chanch Bungalow stands as a symbol of the former state’s deep connection with maritime routes, trade, and coastal life. Though time and weather have left their marks on the structure, its presence continues to intrigue visitors and locals alike. Today, Chanch has grown into a known tourist destination, and the bungalow remains one of its most compelling landmarks.
Chanch Bungalow is not just a royal residence; it is a storyteller—speaking of Bhavnagar’s princely legacy, its relationship with the sea, and the architectural vision of a bygone era. Interestingly, the term “Chanch Bungalow” also finds mention in Assam, where similar stilted bungalows were built during the colonial period to protect tea planters from floods, offering a fascinating parallel in architectural history.

ચાંચ બંગલો, અમરેલી ભાવનગર ગુજરાતના ભાવનગર શહેરમાં ચાંચ બંદર નજીક આવેલો ચાંચ બંગલો સ્થાપત્ય શ્રેષ્ઠતા અને ભવ્યતાનું એક અદભુત ઉદાહરણ છે. ચાચ બંગલો ગુજરાતના અમરેલી જિલ્લાના રાજુલા તાલુકાના ચાંચ નામના દરિયાકાંઠાના ગામમાં આવેલો છે, જે ઐતિહાસિક રીતે ભાવનગર રજવાડાના ભાગ હતો. આ બંગલો દરિયા કિનારે ભાવનગર રાજ્યના મહારાજા સાહેબ શ્રી કૃષ્ણકુમાર સિંહજી દ્વારા બનાવવામાં આવ્યો હતો. આ બંગલોનો શિલાન્યાસ ૧૯૪૫માં અખાત્રીજના દિવસે કરવામાં આવ્યો હતો.
તેને પૂર્ણ થવામાં આશરે ૧૦ વર્ષ લાગ્યા હતા, અને તે સમયે અંદાજિત ખર્ચ ૨૦ લાખ રૂપિયા થયો હતો. આ બંગલો ઘણો મોટો છે, જેમાં ૮૮ રૂમ હોવાનું કહેવાય છે. ચાચ બંગલો ભાવનગરના ભૂતપૂર્વ રજવાડાના રાજ્ય અને તેના શાસકોના વારસાનો પુરાવો છે. સમુદ્ર કિનારે તેનું સ્થાન આ પ્રદેશમાં દરિયાઈ પ્રવૃત્તિઓના ઐતિહાસિક મહત્વને ઉજાગર કરે છે. આજે, ચાંચ એક જાણીતું પર્યટન સ્થળ છે, અને બંગલો, સમય જતાં તેને થોડું નુકસાન થયું હોવા છતાં, તે એક રસપ્રદ મુદ્દો છે.
તેથી, ભાવનગર (હવે અમરેલી જિલ્લો) માં આવેલ ચાચ બંગલો 20મી સદીના મધ્યમાં ભાવનગરના મહારાજા દ્વારા બાંધવામાં આવેલ એક ઐતિહાસિક માળખું છે, જે આ પ્રદેશના શાહી ભૂતકાળ અને દરિયાકાંઠાના મહત્વને દર્શાવે છે. રસપ્રદ વાત એ છે કે, "ચાંચ બંગલો" શબ્દનો ઉપયોગ આસામમાં ચાના વાવેતર કરનારાઓના પૂરને રોકવા માટે સ્ટિલ્ટ પર બાંધવામાં આવેલા બંગલાઓ માટે પણ થાય છે. આ બંગલો પ્રદેશના વસાહતી ભૂતકાળની ઝલક આપે છે અને હવે તે લોકપ્રિય પર્યટન સ્થળો છે.
